Muslim families in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Oslo, Copenhagen, Aarhus and smaller towns across Scandinavia often live far from a mosque with a qualified Quran teacher, or find that local classes do not match the school week. One-to-one online classes bring a certified teacher into your home by video. This guide explains why they suit families in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and how to plan around the long summer days and short winter days.

Why English-Taught Classes Suit Scandinavian Children

Classes at Elbayan Academy are taught in English, Arabic and French. We do not teach in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish. In Scandinavia this is rarely a problem: children start learning English early at school and hear it every day online, so many school-age children follow simple English instructions easily. Arabic-speaking families can have the whole lesson in Arabic.

Time Difference Between Scandinavia and Cairo

Sweden, Norway and Denmark use Central European Time, and Cairo is usually one hour ahead. For a few weeks in spring and autumn the clocks change on different dates, so the difference changes briefly. Classes run 24/7, and your teacher books lessons in your local time.

Planning Around Light and Dark Seasons

Prayer times move a lot during the year in Scandinavia. In winter, Maghrib and Isha come early in the afternoon and evening; in summer they come very late. Families usually follow the timetable of their local mosque. A Quran class can be planned around it:

SeasonWhat often works
WinterA class after school and before an early Maghrib, or after dinner
SummerA class in the late afternoon, so the child is not up too late
RamadanA short class at a time that does not clash with iftar; see our Ramadan Quran plan for families
Summer holidayExtra classes to move faster or start Hifz

Keeping the same weekly class days all year, and only moving the time, helps children keep the habit.

Sounds to Watch for Swedish, Norwegian and Danish Speakers

  • Long vowels (madd): these languages have long and short vowels, which helps learners feel the difference in Arabic.
  • ث and ذ: the “th” sounds are new for most learners; the Danish soft d is close to ذ.
  • ر (Raa): in Danish and in some Swedish accents the r is made at the back of the mouth; the Arabic r is made with the tip of the tongue.
  • ح, ع, خ and غ: throat sounds that need careful practice.
  • Heavy letters: ص, ض, ط, ظ and ق, read with the back of the tongue raised.

A Learning Path

  1. Reading: the Noor Al-Bayan course for beginners of any age.
  2. Tajweed: the recitation and Tajweed course; for children see Tajweed for children.
  3. Memorization: Quran Hifz classes for kids or online Hifz classes.
  4. Arabic: Arabic for kids or Arabic for adults.

Sisters can choose a female teacher; see our women’s program. Reverts and adults can start with Quran classes for adults.

Families Far from a Mosque

Outside the big cities, the nearest mosque with Quran classes may be a long drive away, especially in the north and in winter. Online classes remove the journey: the child learns at home, in a warm room, at the same time each week. Parents can sit nearby, hear the lesson and help with daily practice.

Tips for Parents in Scandinavia

  • Use the dark evenings: winter is a good season for a steady routine at home.
  • Practise 10 minutes a day: short daily reading keeps progress steady.
  • Use a headset: it helps the teacher hear every letter clearly.
  • Read the monthly report: it shows what your child has learned and what to review.
