Families in the Netherlands have one big advantage with online Quran classes: Cairo is only 0 to 1 hour ahead, so an after-school class in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague or Utrecht happens at a normal time for the teacher too. With one-to-one, 30-minute classes running 24/7, children can learn around school, sport and homework without travelling to a mosque.
The Time Difference
For most of the year Cairo is 1 hour ahead of the Netherlands. From late March to late April, when the Netherlands has moved to summer time but Egypt has not yet, both are on the same time. Examples:
| Netherlands time | Cairo time (most of the year) | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday 1:30 PM | 2:30 PM | Primary children on a short school day |
| 4:30 PM | 5:30 PM | Children after school |
| 7:00 PM | 8:00 PM | After dinner and homework |
| 9:00 PM | 10:00 PM | Working adults |
| Saturday 10:00 AM | 11:00 AM | Weekend learners and Hifz revision |
Using the Dutch School Week
Many Dutch primary schools finish early on Wednesday, which leaves a calm afternoon that suits a Quran class. Other popular choices are a weekday class around 4:30 PM, after the child has had a snack and some rest, and a Saturday or Sunday morning class for families with weekday sport or music.
- 8 classes a month ($40): for example Wednesday 1:30 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM.
- 16 classes a month ($80): Monday to Thursday after school, for children memorizing the Quran.
Children Who Speak Dutch at Home
Classes are taught in English, Arabic and French, not in Dutch. Most Dutch children learn English at school and follow simple explanations well, especially as they get older. For young beginners, a parent nearby in the first weeks helps. Because most of each lesson is the child reading and the teacher correcting, language becomes less important as reading improves. For beginners, see which beginner book to start with.
Online Classes and the Local Mosque
Many mosques in the Netherlands run weekend Quran lessons, often in groups and sometimes in Arabic or Turkish. Online one-to-one classes can sit alongside them: the mosque for community, and the online teacher for focused correction of each letter. Families also save time on travel between cities and neighbourhoods.
What Children and Adults Can Learn
- Reading from the letters: the Noor Al-Bayan course, from 6 years old.
- Tajweed: Tajweed for children and the recitation and Tajweed course.
- Hifz: Hifz classes for kids and online Hifz classes.
- Arabic: Arabic for kids and Arabic for adults.
- Ijazah and the Ten Qiraat for advanced students.
A First Month for a Beginner in Rotterdam
- Week 1: level check and the first letters, Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning.
- Week 2: more letters and how they join.
- Week 3: short vowels, with ten minutes of daily practice.
- Week 4: simple joined words and the first monthly progress report.
School Holidays
Dutch school holidays, such as autumn break, Christmas, spring break and the long summer holiday, are a good time to keep classes going for revision. In summer, some families move from 8 to 16 classes a month for faster progress, then go back to 8 when school starts.
Siblings and Family Plans
Each child has their own one-to-one class and plan, so siblings at different levels learn at their own pace. Back-to-back slots, such as 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM, keep the afternoon simple for parents. A 10% family discount applies when more than one family member studies.
Ramadan in the Netherlands
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around February 8, 2027, depending on the moon sighting. In February, days are short in the Netherlands, so iftar comes early in the evening. Many families move classes to right after school, or to weekend mornings, so the evening stays free for iftar and Taraweeh. Our Ramadan Quran plan for families has daily reading targets by age.
