Ramadan is the month many American Muslim families try to read and learn more Quran, but school, work and late Taraweeh nights make it hard to keep a routine. A good Ramadan plan is realistic: a fixed short class time, a daily reading target that fits each person’s age, and a routine you set up before the month starts. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around February 8, 2027, depending on the moon sighting, so the best time to plan is in January.

What Changes in a US Ramadan

  • School and work continue: unlike in Muslim-majority countries, the school day and office hours stay the same.
  • Early iftar in winter: in February, Maghrib in most US cities comes in the early evening, so iftar, Isha and Taraweeh fill most of the evening.
  • Tired evenings: children fasting for the first time, or staying up for Taraweeh, may be too tired for a late class.
  • More motivation: families are more eager to read, which is the opportunity to build a habit that lasts after Ramadan.

Prayer times change every day and differ by city, so use your local mosque’s Ramadan timetable when you set class times.

Daily Reading Targets by Age

  • Ages 6–8: one lesson of the reading book, or a few short verses from Juz Amma, with a parent listening.
  • Ages 9–12: one page a day, or review of the surahs they have memorized.
  • Teens: two to five pages a day, or a Hifz revision portion.
  • Adults aiming to complete the Quran: one juz a day is about 20 pages; dividing it as four pages after each of the five prayers makes it manageable.

The right target is the one you can keep for 30 days. It is better to read a little every day than a lot for a week and then stop.

A Sample Week for a Family of Four

A family in Chicago with two children (8 and 13) and two parents:

  • 8-year-old: classes Monday and Wednesday at 4:00 PM, right after school.
  • 13-year-old: Hifz classes Monday to Thursday at 4:30 PM, before Asr becomes busy.
  • Mother: Tajweed class Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 AM with a female teacher.
  • Father: lunch-break class on Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Every evening after iftar: ten minutes of family recitation, each person reading a short part they practised.

Preparing in the Weeks Before Ramadan

  1. Choose your Ramadan class times in January and test them for a week or two before the month starts.
  2. Set one goal per person: finish a reading level, memorize a surah, or complete the Quran.
  3. Prepare the space: a quiet corner, charged devices, headphones and Mushafs ready.
  4. Talk to the children: explain the plan and let them choose a small reward for reaching their goal.

Keeping Children Motivated During the Month

  • A wall chart where children tick each day’s reading.
  • A short recitation after iftar for the whole family to hear.
  • Praise effort, not only speed: correct reading matters more than many pages.
  • For young children who are fasting part of the day, keep classes earlier, before they get tired.

Ramadan for New Muslims and Beginners in the Family

For someone who is still learning to read, Ramadan is not about the number of pages. A realistic goal is to finish a stage of the reading course, or to learn Surah Al-Fatihah and a few short surahs with correct pronunciation. A beginner can also listen to a juz each day while following the English meaning, and read a few verses aloud in class. Every step counts.

After Ramadan: Keeping the Habit

The real success of a Ramadan plan is what continues in Shawwal. Keep at least the regular weekly classes, and turn the daily Ramadan reading into a smaller daily habit, such as one page a day. The monthly progress report helps you see what Ramadan achieved and set the next goal.
