Hifz means memorizing the Holy Quran by heart. A person who has memorized the whole Quran is called a Hafiz (or Hafidh), and a woman a Hafiza. In this guide we explain the meaning of Hifz in Arabic, what it involves, the rewards mentioned in the Sunnah and how to start your own Hifz journey, even as a busy adult or a young child.

What does Hifz mean in Arabic?

The word hifz (حفظ) comes from the Arabic root ḥ-f-ẓ, which carries the meanings of preserving, protecting and guarding. Memorizing the Quran is called Hifz because the memorizer preserves the words of Allah in their heart and protects them from being forgotten. Allah Himself describes the Quran with the same root: “Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardian” (Al-Hijr 15:9).

What does Hifz of the Quran involve?

Hifz is more than remembering words. A complete Hifz includes:

  • Correct reading: every letter and vowel pronounced correctly.
  • Tajweed: applying the rules of recitation while memorizing.
  • Accurate memorization: reciting each portion without mistakes.
  • Revision: regularly revising what was memorized so it is not lost.
  • Connection: understanding the general meaning, and living by what is memorized.

Hafiz, Hafiza and partial Hifz

The title Hafiz is usually given to someone who has memorized the entire Quran: 114 surahs and 30 juz. But Hifz is not all or nothing. Memorizing Juz Amma, Surah Al-Kahf, Surah Al-Mulk or any part of the Quran is a blessed achievement, and every verse memorized is a step on the same path.

The rewards of Hifz

The Sunnah describes great honour for those who learn and memorize the Quran:

  • The Prophet ﷺ said that the one who is skilled in the Quran will be with the noble and righteous angelic scribes, and the one who recites it with difficulty will have a double reward (Bukhari and Muslim).
  • He ﷺ said that it will be said to the companion of the Quran: “Recite and rise, and recite as you used to recite in the world, for your rank will be at the last verse you recite” (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi).
  • He ﷺ said that the best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it (Bukhari).

How Hifz is done: the basic method

  1. Learn to read correctly first, for example with the Noor Al-Bayan course.
  2. Choose one Mushaf and keep using it. See our guide to the best Quran for Hifz.
  3. Listen to the portion from a skilled reciter several times.
  4. Memorize in small pieces: one verse at a time, then join the verses together.
  5. Recite to a teacher who corrects every mistake.
  6. Revise daily: recent memorization and older memorization, in a planned cycle.

How long does Hifz take?

There is no single answer. It depends on the time you give each day, your reading level, your age and how consistently you revise. Some students memorize the whole Quran in a few years; others take longer while working or studying. What matters is steady progress with strong revision, not speed.

Can adults and children do Hifz?

Yes. Children often memorize quickly with short, regular sessions, while adults bring focus and understanding. Read our realistic Hifz plan for adults and our page on Quran memorization for children.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Hifz and Tajweed?

Tajweed is the set of rules for reciting correctly; Hifz is memorizing the Quran. A good Hifz applies Tajweed in every verse.

Is a Hafiz required to know Arabic?

No. Many Huffaz do not speak Arabic, but learning the meanings makes memorization stronger and more meaningful.
