Busy adults in Canada can learn Arabic online with a realistic plan: two or four 30-minute one-to-one classes a week, ten to fifteen minutes of daily practice, and a clear order of what to learn first. Whether you are a professional in Toronto, a parent in Calgary or a new Muslim in Montreal, short lessons at a fixed time are easier to keep than long weekly courses.
Why Adults Want to Learn Arabic
- Understanding the Quran and prayer: knowing what you recite in salah.
- New Muslims: reading the Quran and learning common Islamic phrases.
- Helping children: supporting kids who are learning Arabic or Quran.
- Family and heritage: communicating with relatives.
- Travel, work or study: in the Arab world.
What to Learn First
- Reading the script: letters, sounds and joining, with the Noor Al-Bayan course. This is the first goal for most adult beginners.
- Core vocabulary: high-frequency words, including common words in the Quran and in prayer.
- Basic grammar: how sentences are built, pronouns, and the root system that connects related words.
- Listening and speaking: everyday conversations at a comfortable pace.
- Reading short texts: including short verses with their meaning.
Our Arabic for adults course follows this order, and the teacher adjusts it to your goal, such as Quranic understanding or conversation.
Weekly Routines That Work for Busy Adults
| Routine | Plan | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Two evenings a week, 8:30 PM | 8 classes a month ($40) | Working parents |
| Lunch break, Tuesday and Thursday | 8 classes a month ($40) | Office workers |
| Early morning, Monday to Thursday | 16 classes a month ($80) | Fast learners and new Muslims with a strong goal |
| Saturday and Sunday mornings | 8 classes a month ($40) | Shift workers and students |
Classes run 24/7, so any of these works in every Canadian time zone. For conversions, see our Canada time guide.
For New Muslims
New Muslims often want to start with what they need right away: reading Al-Fatihah and short surahs correctly, understanding the words of salah, and common phrases. One-to-one classes are a comfortable place to start, with no pressure and no group to keep up with. Sisters can choose a female teacher. Classes are taught in English, Arabic and French, so everything is explained clearly. See also our online Quran classes for adults.
Quranic Arabic or Everyday Arabic?
Adults often ask which Arabic to learn. Quranic and classical Arabic share their grammar and much of their vocabulary with Modern Standard Arabic, the formal language of books and news. Spoken dialects differ more. If your main goal is understanding the Quran and prayer, focus on Quranic vocabulary and grammar. If you want to talk with Arabic-speaking relatives or colleagues, add conversation practice. Tell your teacher your goal in the trial class, and the plan will be built around it.
Making It Stick
- Fixed times: put classes in your calendar like any other appointment.
- Ten to fifteen minutes a day: review the week’s words on the bus, at lunch or before bed.
- Use it right away: greet in Arabic, read Arabic signs at the mosque, follow the meaning in salah.
- Track progress: a monthly progress report shows what you have learned and the next goal.
- Expect plateaus: every learner has slower weeks; regular classes carry you through them.
A First Month for an Adult Beginner in Toronto
- Week 1: letters and sounds, Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 PM Eastern.
- Week 2: joining letters and reading short words.
- Week 3: vowels and first vocabulary, including words from Al-Fatihah.
- Week 4: reading Al-Fatihah with understanding, and the first monthly report.
Arabic and Quran Together
Many adults split their classes between Arabic and Quran, for example one Arabic and one Tajweed class a week. Arabic helps you understand what you recite, and recitation strengthens pronunciation. See our recitation and Tajweed course.
