Noorani Qaida and Noor Al-Bayan are two of the best-known beginner books for learning to read the Quran. Both take a learner from the Arabic letters to reading Quranic words, but they come from different traditions and are laid out differently.
What They Have in Common
Both books follow a similar gradual path:
- Recognizing and pronouncing the Arabic letters.
- How letters change shape when they join.
- Short vowels (harakat) and tanween.
- Long vowels and madd.
- Sukun and shaddah.
- Reading full Quranic words and short phrases.
How They Differ
- Where they are common: Noorani Qaida is widely used in South Asia and in many communities in the UK and North America, while Noor Al-Bayan is widely used across the Arab world.
- Script style: Noorani Qaida is usually printed in the Indo-Pak script, while Noor Al-Bayan uses the script style familiar from the Madani (Uthmani) Mushaf.
- Which Mushaf it prepares you for: learners who will read from an Indo-Pak Mushaf may find Noorani Qaida familiar; those who will read from a Madani Mushaf may find Noor Al-Bayan a smoother transition.
Which One Should You Choose?
Both can build a strong reading foundation. The most important factors are a qualified teacher who corrects pronunciation from the first lesson, and steady practice. If you already plan to use a Madani Mushaf, Noor Al-Bayan connects naturally to it.
How Elbayan Academy Teaches Beginners
Our beginners, both children from 6 years old and adults, start with the Noor Al-Bayan course in one-to-one, 30-minute classes, then move on to recitation and Tajweed. Read more about the Madani and Indo-Pak scripts.
Which Mushaf Comes Next?
After the beginner book, students move on to reading from a full Mushaf. Learners who used Noorani Qaida often continue with an Indo-Pak Mushaf, while Noor Al-Bayan leads naturally to the Madani Mushaf. Either path is fine. Students who want to change later can follow our step-by-step guide to switching from the Indo-Pak to the Madani Mushaf.
Tips for Parents Choosing a Book
- Choose the book that matches the Mushaf your family reads at home or in your mosque.
- Keep sessions short and frequent: ten minutes a day helps more than one long weekly lesson.
- Ask the teacher to correct pronunciation from the first letter, before habits form.
- Move on to Tajweed for children once your child reads joined words smoothly.

How Long Does It Take to Finish a Beginner Book?
It depends on the learner’s age, how many classes they take each week and how much they practise between classes. Children and adults who attend regularly and review a little every day move through the lessons steadily. The goal is not to finish quickly but to read each letter and sound correctly before moving on, because mistakes learned at this stage are hard to correct later.
Tips for Learning Either Book
- Read aloud every day: even five minutes of reading aloud builds fluency.
- Do not skip revision: go back over earlier lessons regularly.
- Learn with a teacher: correct pronunciation is learned by listening and being corrected, not only by reading the book.
- Connect it to the Quran: as soon as possible, practise reading short surahs from the Mushaf you will use.
What Comes After the Beginner Book?
Once a learner can read Quranic words smoothly, the next step is recitation with Tajweed, learning the rules that govern pronunciation and elongation. From there, many students move on to memorization (Hifz), and advanced students can work toward an Ijazah. At Elbayan Academy, this path runs from Noor Al-Bayan to recitation and Tajweed, then memorization, the Ten Qiraat and the Ijazah in Hafs from Asim.
