An Ijazah in Quran recitation is a certification from a qualified teacher that you recite the Quran correctly, as it was taught to them. It comes with a Sanad, a connected chain of teachers that goes back to the Prophet ﷺ. Today, students around the world can work toward an Ijazah online with a teacher who holds a Sanad.
What You Need Before Starting
- Fluent reading: you should read the Quran smoothly with correct pronunciation.
- Solid Tajweed: you should know and apply the rules of Tajweed consistently.
- Commitment: an Ijazah requires regular classes and careful revision over time.
How an Online Ijazah Works, Step by Step
- Level assessment: the teacher listens to your recitation to check your readiness.
- Strengthening Tajweed: any weak points are corrected before the Ijazah recitation begins.
- Reciting the whole Quran: you recite to your teacher one portion at a time, with careful correction.
- Final review: the teacher confirms your recitation meets the required standard.
- Granting the Ijazah: you receive the Ijazah with the Sanad of your teacher.
Recitation (Tilawah) or Memorization (Hifz) Ijazah?
Some students recite the whole Quran from the Mushaf, while others recite it from memory after completing Hifz. Ask your teacher which path suits your level and goals.
How Long Does It Take?
It depends on your starting level, how many classes you take each week and how much you revise between them. Students with strong reading and Tajweed who take 4 classes a week progress faster than those who take 2.

What Happens in an Ijazah Class
Each class is one-to-one and 30 minutes long. You recite a portion of the Quran while the teacher follows closely, stopping you to correct pronunciation, the length of vowels and the application of Tajweed rules. Mistakes are noted, and you repeat the corrected portion until it is right before moving on. Between classes, you prepare the next portion and review the corrections from the last lesson.
Tips to Prepare for Your Ijazah
- Strengthen weak letters first: ask your teacher which sounds need the most work and practise them daily.
- Listen to a single reciter: choose one clear reciter in the Hafs narration and listen to the portion before you recite it.
- Record yourself: listening back helps you hear mistakes you miss while reciting.
- Keep a steady schedule: regular classes matter more than occasional long sessions.
Who Is the Ijazah For?
An Ijazah suits students who already read fluently and want a recognized certification of their recitation, those who plan to teach the Quran, and anyone who wishes to join the chain of transmission that preserves how the Quran has been recited. If you are not ready yet, you can first strengthen your reading with Tajweed classes and move to the Ijazah when your teacher confirms you are ready.
