The Noor Al-Bayan method is a step-by-step way of teaching beginners to read the Quran. It starts with the Arabic letters and their sounds, moves gradually to joined letters, vowels, sukun and shaddah, and ends with reading Quranic words and verses. Once a student reads correctly, memorization builds on that foundation through small portions, repetition and regular revision with a teacher. At Elbayan Academy, beginners of all ages start with this method in one-to-one classes.

What Is the Noor Al-Bayan Method?

Noor Al-Bayan is a beginner’s book and teaching method for reading the Quran, widely used across the Arab world. Its script style is close to the Madani (Uthmani) Mushaf, so students move from the book to the Mushaf smoothly. It suits children from 6 years old and adults who cannot yet read Arabic. For a comparison with another popular book, see Noorani Qaida vs Noor Al-Bayan.

How Noor Al-Bayan Teaches Reading

  1. Letters and sounds: each Arabic letter, with careful pronunciation from the first lesson.
  2. Letter shapes: how letters change when they join at the beginning, middle and end of a word.
  3. Short vowels and tanween: fatha, kasra and damma, and their doubled forms.
  4. Long vowels and madd: how long to stretch certain vowels.
  5. Sukun and shaddah: letters without a vowel, and doubled letters.
  6. Reading Quranic words and verses: applying everything to real text.

Why the Method Works

  • Gradual: each lesson builds on the one before, so students are never overwhelmed.
  • Sound-based: students learn to hear and produce each sound correctly before moving on.
  • Repetition: short, repeated practice fixes letters and patterns in memory.
  • Correction: in one-to-one classes, the teacher corrects every mistake immediately, before it becomes a habit.

From Reading to Memorization

Once a student reads correctly, memorization can begin. A strong reading foundation makes memorization more accurate, because the student can check what they memorize against the Mushaf.

  1. Small portions: a few verses at a time, sized to the student’s age and level.
  2. Listen and repeat: the student hears a clear recitation and repeats it until it is firm.
  3. Recite to the teacher: the teacher listens and corrects pronunciation and Tajweed.
  4. Regular revision: earlier portions are revised so they are not forgotten.

Children continue in Quran Hifz classes for kids or Quran memorization for children; older students join online Hifz classes. Students who later recite the whole Quran with accuracy can work toward an Ijazah in Hafs from Asim.

Common Difficulties and How They Are Handled

  • Similar letters: letters such as ث and س, or ح and ه, are practised side by side until the difference is clear.
  • Joining letters: extra practice on letters that change shape a lot when joined.
  • Vowel lengths: short and long vowels are contrasted in pairs of words.
  • Rushing: students are encouraged to read slowly and correctly before reading fast.
  • Losing interest: short lessons, praise and visible progress through each stage keep children motivated.

How Long Does It Take?

It depends on the student’s age, how many classes they take each week, and how much they practise between classes. Children who take two or four 30-minute classes a week and practise for about ten minutes a day make steady progress. The teacher reviews progress each month.

How Parents Can Help at Home

  • Ten minutes a day: short practice between classes makes each lesson easier.
  • Listen together: play a clear recitation of the lesson or surah.
  • Fixed times: keep the same class slots every week.
  • Encourage effort: praise steady progress more than speed.
  • Read the monthly report: every month you receive a progress report; agree on one goal for the next month together.
  • Celebrate stages: each stage ends with a certificate of appreciation.
