Online Quranic studies let you learn to read, recite, memorize and understand the Quran from home with a qualified teacher. At Elbayan Academy, this covers Quran reading for beginners, Tajweed, memorization, an Ijazah in Hafs from Asim and Arabic for understanding. Every class is one-to-one, so the plan is built around your level and goals.
What Online Quranic Studies Include
Quranic studies is a wide field. For most students, it comes down to five connected areas. You can focus on one, or move from one to the next as you grow.
1. Reading the Quran
Beginners start with the Arabic letters, their sounds and their shapes, then learn vowels, joining letters and reading words. Step by step, they move to reading short surahs and then the Mushaf itself. This stage suits children from age 6, adults starting from zero and new Muslims.
2. Tajweed
Tajweed is the set of rules for reciting the Quran as it was revealed: where each letter comes from, how long vowels are held, and how letters change when they meet. Allah says: “And recite the Quran with measured recitation” (Al-Muzzammil 73:4). A teacher listens to your recitation and corrects each rule as you read.
3. Memorization (Hifz)
Memorization combines new verses with regular revision so that what you learn stays firm. The teacher hears your new portion, checks your revision and sets a target that suits your time. How long Hifz takes depends on your available time, age and consistency, not on a fixed schedule. Our Quran memorization guide shares practical revision tips.
4. Ijazah in Hafs from Asim
For students whose recitation is strong and accurate, the next step can be an Ijazah. This is written permission from a teacher who holds an Ijazah with a connected Sanad, given after the teacher confirms your recitation in the narration of Hafs from Asim. It connects you to the teacher’s chain of reciters. At Elbayan Academy, the Ijazah is offered in Hafs from Asim for a one-time fee of $100. Read more in our guide to the Quran Ijazah online with Sanad.
5. Arabic for understanding
Reading correctly is the foundation. Understanding what you read brings the Quran closer to your heart. Arabic classes build vocabulary and grammar step by step, so you start to recognize words and meanings in the verses you recite and hear in prayer.
One-to-One Learning Instead of Study Circles
Some students search for online Quran study circles. Elbayan Academy teaches one-to-one rather than in group study circles. In a private class, your teacher hears every verse you recite, corrects each mistake and moves at your pace. You also choose your own class times, which makes it easier to keep going for months and years.
Where Should You Start?
| Your situation | A good starting point |
|---|---|
| Cannot read Arabic letters yet | Reading from the letters |
| Can read but make mistakes | Tajweed and recitation |
| Read fluently and want to memorize | Hifz with daily revision |
| Recite accurately and want a Sanad | Ijazah in Hafs from Asim |
| Want to understand what you recite | Arabic for understanding |
Not sure which applies to you? Your teacher will assess your level in the free trial class and suggest where to begin.
These areas also work well together. Many students keep a Tajweed focus while they memorize, or add Arabic classes once they read fluently, so that understanding grows alongside recitation. Your teacher can adjust the balance as your goals change, and your monthly progress report shows what you covered in each area.
