The Seerah is the life story of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Studying it helps a Muslim understand the Quran in its setting, love the Prophet ﷺ and follow his example in worship, family life and character. This guide walks through the key stages of the Seerah and explains how to learn Seerah online.

Why study the Seerah?

  • To understand the Quran: many verses were revealed in response to events in the Prophet’s life.
  • To follow his example: Allah describes the Messenger as an excellent example for believers (Al-Ahzab 33:21).
  • To build love and connection: knowing his patience, mercy and courage brings the heart closer to him ﷺ.
  • To find guidance: the Seerah shows how to act in hardship, success, conflict and peace.

Key stages in the life of the Prophet ﷺ

Early life in Makkah

Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah, around the year 570 CE, known as the Year of the Elephant. His father died before he was born and his mother when he was six; he was raised by his grandfather Abdul-Muttalib and then his uncle Abu Talib. He spent part of his childhood in the desert with his foster mother Halimah. As a young man he was known as Al-Amin, the trustworthy, and at around twenty-five he married Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her.

The first revelation

At about forty years of age, while worshipping in the Cave of Hira, the angel Jibreel came to him with the first verses of Surah Al-Alaq: “Read in the name of your Lord who created.” Khadijah was the first to believe in him.

The call to Islam in Makkah

For about three years the call was quiet, then it became public. The early Muslims faced mockery, boycott and persecution, and some migrated to Abyssinia. In the “Year of Sorrow” the Prophet ﷺ lost both Khadijah and Abu Talib. He then travelled to Ta’if, where he was rejected, and was honoured with the Night Journey and Ascension (Al-Isra wal-Mi’raj), when the five daily prayers were prescribed.

The Hijrah to Madinah

In 622 CE the Prophet ﷺ migrated to Madinah with Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him. This event marks the start of the Islamic calendar. In Madinah he built the mosque, joined the emigrants and the Ansar in brotherhood and established a community based on faith and justice.

Years of struggle and growth

Key events include the Battle of Badr (2 AH), Uhud (3 AH), the Battle of the Trench (5 AH) and the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah (6 AH), which opened the way for peace and the spread of Islam.

The conquest of Makkah and the final years

In 8 AH the Muslims entered Makkah almost without fighting, and the Prophet ﷺ forgave his former enemies. In 10 AH he performed the Farewell Pilgrimage and delivered his famous sermon. He passed away in Madinah in 11 AH (632 CE), at the age of sixty-three.

Lessons from the Seerah

  • Patience and trust in Allah in difficult times.
  • Mercy and forgiveness, even towards enemies.
  • Honesty and keeping promises.
  • Kindness to family, neighbours, children and the weak.
